NEW PROCESS as of January 2021: All Payments and Paperwork Sent to RI DMV
In June 2011, then Governor Lincoln Chafee and the Rhode Island Legislature created legislation authorizing a new Red Sox charity license plate, which will raise funds for the Red Sox Foundation’s Rhode Island Red Sox Scholarship Program for academically talented Rhode Island high school seniors going on to college who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.
This opportunity is open only to those with a car or truck currently registered in Rhode Island. The cost of the Red Sox charitable plate is $42.50. Of that $42.50, $22.50 goes to the state’s DMV to cover plate production costs, and $20 goes to the Red Sox Foundation to help fund our new college scholarship programs for Rhode Island high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to community service.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Rhode Island Red Sox Charitable License Plate:
Yes, if you have 5 or fewer digits on your current RI License plate, you will have the same RI plate number. When you switch to a Red Sox license plate, your current number is transferred to the new plate. Just think of it as ordering a new background design for your existing plate. Please fill out the Red Sox RI license plate order form and return it with the $42.50 payment and a copy of your current registration to the address on the order form.
Unfortunately, the DMV can only fit five or fewer digits on the Red Sox charity license plate. If you currently have a six-digit RI license plate, you will need to go to any DMV branch and transfer your current license plate to a five-digit license plate (there is an additional fee of $22.50). AFTER you have your RI five-digit license plate, please fill out the RI Red Sox charity license plate order form and return the form with the $42.50 check made out to the Red Sox Foundation and a copy of your current registration to the address on the order form and we will place the order with RI Division of Motor Vehicles for your new Red Sox logo plate with the same 5 or fewer digit number accordingly.
The Red Sox Foundation has a limited number of special letter/number combinations beginning with the letters “RS” that will be put up for auction at a later date.
If you are interested in changing your license plate number before applying for a RI Red Sox charity license plate, the DMV has guidelines on what letter and number combinations are available. These rules are set by the RI DMV, so please visit www.dmv.ri.gov for more information.
Before applying for a Red Sox RI license plate, you first must register your car with the RI Division of Motor Vehicles and obtain a standard license plate with 5 or fewer digits. After you have a 5 digit RI plate, you can apply for the Red Sox charity license plate following the steps for transfer by filling out the RI Red Sox charity license plate order form, submitting payment of $52.50 to the Red Sox Foundation along with a COPY of your current car/truck registration.
The cost of a RI Red Sox charity license plate is $42.50 IN ADDITION to the normal vehicle registration fee, which is set by the state of RI. Of that $42.50 first-time fee, $22.50 will go to the DMV to cover plate production costs and state fee, and $20 will go to the Red Sox Foundation to benefit the Rhode Island Red Sox Scholarship Program.
Buying the RI Red Sox charity license plate does not change the renewal deadline for you to renew your vehicle registration. When you renew your vehicle registration as required by state law, you will be asked to renew your RI Red Sox charity license plate at the same time.
Once you have a RI Red Sox charity license plate, you will keep that same plate in the future. In addition to the normal vehicle registration fee, once you have a RI Red Sox plate, the cost for renewing your RI Red Sox charity license plate is an additional $10 surcharge, all of which will go directly to the Red Sox Foundation.
Please mail the RI Red Sox charity license plate order form to:
